Welcome to Hallingdal Museum – one of Norway's oldest open-air museums, beautifully situated by the Rukkedalselva river in Nesbyen. Experience the authentic history of Hallingdal through 30 historic buildings, engaging exhibitions, and live storytelling.
Experience the Summer Season:
- Guided Tours: We offer guided tours of the historic buildings every day the museum is open. Tours start on demand.
- Explore on Your Own: The outdoor grounds are open for exploration, and most buildings feature informational signs. Please note that entry into the buildings is only permitted with a guide.
- Historical Treasures: Experience the unique medieval Staveloftet (c. 1340) – one of the country's best-preserved non-religious wooden buildings from the Middle Ages.
- Reading Nook: Relax with local history books in our cozy facilities.
Exhibitions in 2026:
We present a wide variety of permanent and temporary exhibitions:
- Contact: Hallingdal and the World, 1600–1900
- Hans Gude: Exhibition featuring original artworks
- Tubfrim: Stamps, volunteerism, and public health
- WWII in Hallingdal: War history and the Home Front 1940–1945
- Traditional Costumes: Folk dress and historic clothing
- Craftsmanship Workshops: Morten Espeset’s Silver Smithy, Lars Grasdokk’s Gunsmith Workshop, and Scythe-making in Hallingdal.
Activity Days – Every Wednesday in July:
On Wednesdays, the museum comes alive with extra activities for the whole family. Usually, you can experience:
- An open General Store with old-fashioned sweets
- The storytelling theater "The Girl in the Stave Loft"
- Demonstrations of traditional crafts like blacksmithing and weaving
- Café serving fresh waffles in the Tandberg Building
Tickets and Prices:
- Adult: 120 NOK
- Child, Student, Senior: 80 NOK
- Children (0–3 years): Free
Multi-site Ticket: From July 1st to August 15th, your ticket grants admission to all of Hallingdal Museum’s visitor sites for 6 days.

Founded in 1899, Hallingdal Museum is home to 30 historical buildings and approximately 30,000 artifacts from across the region. Throughout the summer, we offer theme days and activities that provide a vivid encounter with local history. In the Tandberg Building, you can visit the WWII Home Front exhibition and various traditional craft displays.
